Commissioning Ceremony HMS Daring
Date: July 2009
Location: Portsmouth Naval Base, Hampshire UK
Event duration: approx. 2 hours
No. of guests: approx. 200 visitors, 150 ship crew + 1 member of Royal Family
Requirements: This event required a weather proof sound system of the highest quality and reliability. The conditions were poor to extreme. High winds meant that the lectern microphones had to be ‘double bagged’ with wind muffs. We used full range speakers with weather resistant cabs on heavy duty speaker stands that we tethered to various anchoring points with short cargo straps.
Because of the conditions we decided to operate from out of the vehicle. Shore power was provided from a 32A single phase outlet that we converted to 16A and 13A outlets via an RCD power board. 3 x 19” racks were tethered in the van. We used 6 high powered stereo amplifiers, digital mixing desk, audio control and distribution via equalizers and compressor/limiters to tame any wind noise that might break through.
We also provided lighting and power distribution for the marquee with 8 chandeliers providing 3.4Kw of light.
The event was a complete success with the captain of the new Type 45 Destroyer personally thanking us for a faultless performance.
